The Sobey Art Foundation was established in 1981 with the mandate to carry on the work of entrepreneur and business leader, the late Frank H. Sobey, who was a dedicated collector of investment quality Canadian art. The Sobey Art Foundation continues the work begun by Frank Sobey, preserving representative examples of 19th and 20th century Canadian art.
One of the finest private collections of its kind, the Sobey Art Foundation has assembled exemplary examples from Canadian Masters such as Cornelius Krieghoff, Tom Thomson, J.E.H. MacDonald and David Milne. The collection is housed in an intimate setting at Crombie House, the former home of Frank Sobey and his wife Irene in Pictou County, Nova Scotia.
Much of the significant art housed at the Crombie House is currently on a national tour. Please visit the Crombie House website here for further details about the Generations exhibition.
On behalf of the Sobey Art Foundation Chair, Rob Sobey, we are thrilled to announce the exhibition Generations: The Sobey Family and Canadian Art. This exhibition tells the story of the Sobey family’s visionary engagement with Canadian and Indigenous art and includes 175 works from across various Sobey family collections, family gifts to public institutions, as well as the Sobey Art Foundation collection. This nationally touring exhibition began at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg, Ontario. Having visited several museums and galleries across Canada, Generations is now being exhibited at:

We are delighted to be able to share this magnificent collection of Canadian art, making it accessible to diverse audiences across the country. As much of the art included in Generations: The Sobey Family and Canadian Art is on loan from the Crombie Collection, tours of Crombie House will not be available. We hope that you will have the opportunity to view the Exhibition at one of the galleries mentioned above as it makes its way across Canada.
Tours at the Crombie House have been cancelled in 2024, with hopes of reopening in 2025.
